To paraphrase my advisor, Dr. Hettinger, “And just like that, the newest modernity replaced the old.” The automobile, bus, and truck replaced, nay, murdered the streetcar. But long before it did, the Cleveland, Southwestern, and Columbus was the greatest, fastest connectivity Northern Ohio ever saw, along with the other interurbans. Whether it was unprecedented freight speeds, easy, quick regional travel, or the best amusement Northern Ohio could offer, the streetcar paved the way for it. Modernity for all came to Northern Ohio not by rubber tire, but by rails on brick-paved roads.
